What I learned about Methylation from a DNA Test in Dubai

Most people have never heard of methylation—yet it plays a powerful role in everything from our energy levels and hormone balance to our mental health and detox system. I hadn’t heard of it either—until a DNA test I took in Dubai changed how I understand my body forever.Let me explain.

What Is Methylation?

Methylation is a biological process that happens in every cell of your body, all the time. It's how your body turns genes on and off, processes toxins, builds neurotransmitters (like serotonin and dopamine), and even repairs DNA. Think of it like the master switchboard for your body’s internal communication and repair system. But here’s the catch: methylation relies heavily on certain B vitamins, especially B12, B9 (folate), and B6. And not everyone processes these vitamins the same way.

My DNA Test and the Surprise I Found

A few months ago, I took a simple DNA wellness test while I was in Dubai.I found out I carry genetic mutations in my methylation pathway, specifically the MTHFR gene. This means my body can’t convert regular folic acid or B12 into the active forms it needs. I was taking all the right supplements—but I wasn’t absorbing them. This deficiency had likely been affecting me for years—without me knowing.

Around 40–60% of the population has some form of MTHFR mutation, yet most have no idea. It's incredibly common, but rarely tested for—unless you're dealing with fertility struggles, mental health issues, or chronic fatigue. What’s worse is that most common multivitamins and B-complex supplements use synthetic forms like folic acid or cyanocobalamin (a form of B12), which people with these mutations can’t use effectively. In some cases, they can even make symptoms worse.

What You Can Do

If you suspect you might have a methylation issue—or if you just want to optimize your health—here’s what I recommend:

- Get tested. A DNA test (like the one I did) or a methylation-focused blood test can help uncover genetic weaknesses.

- Switch to methylated forms of B vitamins. Look for:

  •  Methylfolate (instead of folic acid)

  •  Methylcobalamin (instead of cyanocobalamin)

  • P5P (active B6)

  • L - Methionine

  • SAMe

Support your body holistically. Methylation affects detoxification, mood, immunity, and even how you age. I had no idea something so small—like a vitamin not being absorbed properly could affect so much. But now I know better, and I feel so much better too.

If you’ve ever felt like “something is off” and can’t explain why... methylation might be the missing piece.
